    Sometimes your computer may display an error with the message tcpdump ethertype 0xcafe. This error can be caused by a number of reasons.

    I am running the following command on my trunk to monitor multicast traffic. I’m new to using tcpdump and looking for people:

      sudo tcpdump -i eth1 -n -delaware multicast

    I see this result – this is only a part. I really don’t know how to interpret this release. Can a man or woman shed light on darkness? The few lines I see seem to be normal, but then I see the rest and don’t know what to think. And why is only ARP displayed? When I apologize, some of these questions seem fundamental. Thanks in advance.

    Isn’t That The Exact Answer You Are Looking For? Browse Through The Many Questions Tagged Tcpdump Multicast Scanning And Ask Your Own Question If You Wish.

    Basic information about interpreting the final tcpdump product can be found and the new tcpdump man page. Just make man in tcpdump your machine and more (and take a few notes, there is a lot). Then Google and a query to the tcpdump tutorial might be helpful, since most of the information displayed by tcpdump is likely protocol specific. Some good tutorials on opening:

    • https://danielmiessler.com/study/tcpdump/
    • http://dillonhale.com/blog/linux-tutorials/tcpdump-primer/

    You can also find Wireshark, a powerful GUI tool based on ideas from tcpdump, a good resource for day to day work and a reference for decoding protocols.

    Answer your secure question: why are you trying to view multicast on this particular host on your computer? If you want to monitor the multicast operation on the main network, you need to log span / rspan traffic for that web hosting provider and then spy on it with your favorite tool – be it tcpdump. If this is a switched network that you are like, you will hardly see multicast packets – your station (default) has ways to be active for all multicast car traffic, unless it registers like everyone else (which requires some extra work, and the sniffer works on its own).

  • The first TCP / IP type shown is still very useful. You can also know all the protocols and their behavior.

    usually this is when a packet has reached several of our network cards (not part of this package)

    – port of source and resource, as well as destination of the current message

    A regular IP header is 20 bytes long, and TCP is another 25 bytes. A 2 in hexadecimal number corresponds to one byte. This means that the headers in the first 20 blocks are Hex dependent.

    c0 = (12 x 16) + (0 x 1) = 192

    a8 means (10 x 16) + (8 times 1) = 168

    01 = (zero x 16) + (1 s 1) = 1

    28 = (multiple x 16) + (8 a 1) = 40
