If you’re not sure if you want to boot Windows and Linux, you may want to access your favorite Linux files in many places from the Windows system. Linux has native support for saving Windows NTFS partitions, but Windows cannot check Linux partitions without third party software.

Therefore, we turned to third-party utilities for help. This list is for applications that support the Ext4 file system, which most newer Linux distributions use by default. All application experts equally support Ext2 and Ext3, and one of them even supports ReiserFS.

Ext2Fsd

Ext2Fsd is a Windows file system driver for Ext3, ext2, and Ext4 file systems. It encourages Windows to read Linux file networks natively and provides access to the music file system via a drive letter that can be accessed by any program.

You can force Ext2Fsd to run on every boot, maybe open it only when you need it. While they could theoretically help when writing to the Linux space, I haven’t testedl it. I myself would be wary of this option – a cheap offer can go wrong. However, read-only support is fine and there is no risk of messing things up.

Ext2 volume manager allows you to specify mount points for Linux partitions and change Ext2Fsd settings.

Can Windows read ext4 partitions?

Ext4 or Extended File System Version 4 is a file course for Linux. While Linux may contain NTFS, Windows 10 is unlikely to support Ext4. So way out of the question, can Windows 11/10 read ext4 – No! However, you can use third party ext4 playback software on Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Linux Reader does not provide access via drive letter; rather, it’s a remote application that you run to view someone’s Linux partitions.

Ext2explorer

We’ve covered Ext2explore in the past. This is an open source application that works similarly with DiskInternals Reader, but on Linux only for Ext4, Ext3 and Ext2 partitions. It obviously lacks file previews, but it does have one advantage: it doesn’t have to be installed if desired; You can just save and run the .exe.

However, Ext2explore.exe does notMust be run as director, otherwise you will get a specific error. You can do this from any of our context menus.

How do I open a Linux partition on Windows?

Locate the Linux partition under Hard Drives or Removable Storage. You can either double-click to view the documentation, or right-click and select “Open Score” from the drop-down menu instead. You will see a split screen with a key half showing the files and folders on your Linux drive.

To save time in the future, go to the user file’s properties window and on the “Compatibility” tab, check “Run this entire program as an administrator”.

As with the Linux Reader, you must save a specific file or move your valuable Windows system to a directory before you can open items in other programs.

If you have a Linux distribution with Windows installed on your PC, you will have no problem accessing your wonderful Windows drive. NTFS, the more recent Windows file system, is well supported, and in addition, most Linux distributions will be able to easily mount NTFS drives.

However, this does not apply to the user Windows users. Generic Linux file products such as Ext4 are not supported. If you want to access Linux partitions while working on Windows, you’ll need to install additional software to do some of the work.
