FXS (Foreign Exchange Subscriber) is usually the port that actually delivers the analog line to the subscriber. FXO (Foreign Exchange Office) is the output that receives the analog line. This is the fax machine jack or analog telephone system jack(s).

FXS/FXO Basics

FXO/FXS is also a typical analog circuit used to provide a single analog telephone to provide connectivity to the home.
The FXO port (or FXO device) is considered to be a service line connecting port that can hang up/off-hook along the way and transmit numbers when off-hook to initiate a simple call. It uses a relay that closes the circuit when the port removed from the tube, and opens the circuit when the port is literally on the hook. It connects to FXS on the other side.
Just like the FXO ports terminate the lines in your carrying case, you can also think of it as an analog handset or fax/modem.
The FXS port is a device that connects to a channel and provides tone or phantom dialing and ringing power to a great FXO device. The FXS port provides a secure connection between the gateway and devices such as telephones, fax machines, and modems. The FXS plugin uses only 2 wires (ring lug) for signal transmission and an additionalaudio channel on this contact. This two-wire pair can typically provide ringing, power, telephone, and station tone.

To better understand how to deal with these two types of pots, you should first look at how a particular call is built on them. This section shows the analog call process from the point where all terminals hang up to the point where there are two types of sound.

How do I know if my voice port is open?

Similarly, a huge line must be connected from the FXS port to the FXO port for the connection to have any effect. When the FXO port of your current analog phone is connected to the FXS port on the wall, everyone gets service (FXS) from the home phone company and you hear hard dialing when you pick up your current phone.
The previous example is a basic sequence of actions from the beginning to the end of a call. For now, however, there is more going on behind the scenes at FXS to report on the phone associated with each of their call states. The following section discusses the two main common signaling methods using FXS ports on Cisco analog gateways.
Signaling The Start Of A Loop
Loop triggered signaling is a common method of signaling access over the standard public switched telephone network (PSTN) or analog port that connects a real number of devices to your network. Most home phones are analog loop-start phones based on the local loop concept you saw a long time ago. The loop is a well-connected electrical path consisting of two wire connections,one for transmission and one for positive reception of voice signals.
The two-wire circuit was still called tip and ring, with the tip connected to ground and the ring connected to the negative side of our own battery. When the handset needs to be picked up(s) this in turn completes the circuit and creates a loop between the FXS field and the phone. Power is supplied from the analog battery port, indicating a change in status. This state change tells the detector thread on the analog port to beep.

In order to better understand what the logs of significant outgoing successful calls on the FXS port look like, these logs are first annotated so that you can clearly identify each part of the call.
